What Does SMART Mean?
SMART officially stands for the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. Dr. Browning has obtained the certification to effectively use it to treat patients of all ages from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Technology (IAOMT).
At our Martinsburg dental office, our team works hard to promote dentistry that’s safe and free from mercury along with all of the continuing advancements in biological dentistry. When we remove metal or amalgam fillings from your mouth, there’s a good chance that mercury vapors are ending up in the air and are inhaled directly into your lungs. Your life and the lives of our entire team could all be at a potential risk.
This led the IAOMT to develop the SMART protocol to reduce the negative health effects that can accompany the removal of old, failing fillings. In order to become certified, a dental office must have to have the proper ventilation, protective gear for you and our staff, high suction to quickly pick up particles prior to becoming airborne, and vitamin dosing before and after treatment.
What about children?
When we’re talking about children’s oral health (we start seeing them as young as age one) SMART stands for Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Treatment. This is just a long, drawn-out way of saying that kids now have a lot more advantages when it comes to fixing their cavities.
This fast, painless option for eliminating cavities uses silver compounds (which are a natural antimicrobial) and a BPA-free composite filling that will give them the functionality and durability that they need in their dental fillings.
